Engineering Management Program Frequently Asked Questions

When is the deadline to apply?

What undergraduate majors are eligible for the Engineering Management degree?

We admit students with engineering undergraduate degrees with the standard mathematics, physics, and mechanics backgrounds.  We will also accept Computer Science, Physics, or Information Science students who have a mathematical and statistical background (i.e., ~4 semesters of detailed Calculus I-III, Differential Equations, Prob/Stats, and highly quantitative electives).

What are the specialization areas?

Each student’s program must include at least 9-credits worth of electives selected to provide a track area of specialization. We have put together seven track areas of specialization + a “build your own track” below tied to common career paths of Engineering Management degree graduates.

Any 5000 or 6000-level College of Engineering non-seminar technical 3 credits or higher course is acceptable. You are also welcome to mix and match courses from different headings or choose courses aligned with your own interests to best serve your professional goals.

What is the tuition?

The current semester tuition rate for M.Eng. students is $26,306.00. In addition, there is a $42.50 fee for Graduate Student Activities. You can find the full listing of the tuition costs here.

Is any financial aid offered?

We encourage you to explore these financial aid resources:

  • College of Engineering merit based fellowships, partial tuition scholarships, and teaching assistantships. You can find a listing for these fellowships, scholarships, and teaching assistantships here.
  • College of Engineering Special Awards, including the Lester B. Knight Scholarship of $40,000, available to highly qualified students who intend to pursue both an M.Eng. and and M.B.A. at Cornell University.

  • Federally funded loans available to Cornell graduate students through the Graduate School.

Do you need work experience?

No, you don’t need work experience to apply to the Cornell Master of Engineering Management program.

What is the job placement rate?

94% of students have a full-time opportunity within three months of graduation.

You will receive a degree from Cornell University College of Engineering.

Is a writing Sample Required?

No, a writing sample is not required.

Do I need to take TOEFL?

The English language proficiency requirement may be waived if the applicant meets at least one of these criteria:

  • is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, or a citizen of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or Canada (except Quebec). Applicants who are citizens of India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc. are not exempt from the requirement.
  • at the time you enroll at Cornell, you will have studied in full-time status for at least two academic years within the last five years in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand, or with English language instruction in Canada or South Africa. Even if English was the language of instruction at your school, if you did not study in one of these countries you are not exempt from the requirement. You must submit a transcript that shows you attended college in one of the approved locations, and that your academic program was at least two years in length.

Can I get an exception or waiver to the TOEFL requirement?

How much is the application fee?

The application fee is $105.

Financial Hardship: In cases where the application fee presents a financial hardship for an applicant, the Graduate School will consider a request for a fee waiver. Please include documentation of need such as a letter from a college financial aid office. If you are not a current student or are unable to obtain a financial aid letter, include a brief description of your financial need and any documentation that supports your request (W2, tax return form, etc.). An email request must be sent to gradadmissions@cornell.edu. Be sure to include the degree program to which you plan to apply. Please note: fee waiver requests will be processed Monday through Friday, during normal business hours, with the exception of holidays and breaks when the university is closed. Allow up to three business days for your request to be processed.

What is the average age of students in the MEM program?

The average age of students in the MEM program is 23-25.
